About Fish Health in BC
Maintaining healthy stock is essential to sustainable and profitable farming. Fish health is not promoted simply by managing disease; rather, it involves the management of all aspects of farm production that may impact fish health, growth, welfare and survival. Nutrition, feed quality and feeding techniques, water quality, handling, grading, vaccination, broodstock management and disease screening are part of an integrated fish health management program.
2010 Quarterly Report
As in other agri-food industries, private veterinarians and fish health professionals are involved in the day-to-day management of fish health in the aquaculture industry. Fish are observed on a daily basis and records of their behaviour, feeding activity, and general physical condition are maintained. If a health problem does arise, the farm’s professional fish health staff is experienced and well trained to address the issue in the most appropriate manner.
