Harmful and Beneficial Insects and Mites of Tree Fruits
Preface
This book was prepared at the request of tree fruit producers, packinghouse fieldmen and horticulturists to consolidate information on the identification, life history and detection of harmful and beneficial insects and mites of tree fruits into one reference. To this end, the colour photographs were selected on the basis of their value in aiding the reader to identify a particular insect or mite and/or the typical damage caused by the insect or mite. The life cycles briefly describe when the various life stages (egg, larva, nymph, pupa, adult) are likely to be present so that the reader knows when to monitor for a particular life stage using the method(s) described. The body lengths of adult and mature nymphal or larval stages are also presented to assist with identification. A host index is provided listing the pests and beneficials associated with particular plant or insect hosts.
Since this book does not contain information on all known harmful and beneficial insects and mites of tree fruits, readers are encouraged to seek expert advice if they have any doubts as to the identity and economic importance of any insects or mites found in their fruit trees. Additional details on the various monitoring methods mentioned are also available from your local extension or packinghouse field services offices.
Increasingly, producers are becoming interested in establishing integrated pest management (IPM) programs in their orchards. As IPM technology is developed, knowledge of the identities and life histories of pests, predators, and parasites will be essential for the successful implementation and maintenance of IPM programs.
The booklet Harmful and Beneficial Insects and Mites of Tree Fruits may be purchased from the B.C. Fruit Growers' Association for $10.00 Cdn (includes taxes, Postage and Handling).
