Game Farms
The government of British Columbia conditionally approved game farming of fallow deer and plains bison in May 1987. Subsequently, reindeer was conditionally approved in February 1988 for the Peace River Region. BCMAL, in conjunction with the Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection (WLAP), administers appropriate legislation to minimize the risks of disease, illegal trade of wildlife and domestic livestock and to foster the industry's development.
British Columbia's approach to game farming satisfies consumer demand while minimizing the impact upon wildlife. Through regulations and licence requirements, the farming of game animals is strictly controlled. Although game farming exists in many other parts of the world, the extent to which each jurisdiction has succeeded with its development varies greatly. This is, in part, due to the regulation (or lack of regulation) of the industry by the governing bodies.
